A Self-Organizing Connectionist Model of Bilingual Lexical Development
نویسنده
چکیده
How do bilingual learners acquire a structured representation for the two lexicons at early stages of lexical acquisition? In this study, we attempt to address this question with Devlex-II, a self-organizing connectionist model. Previous connectionist simulations suggest that bilingual lexical representations may be functionally separate, but architecturally homogeneous (Li & Farkas, 2002). Here, we expand this single-mechanismvariable-representation view from a dynamical developmental perspective. Results from our study will provide insights into the long-standing debate on distinct versus shared structure of bilingual lexical representation.

Bilingual Object Naming: A Connectionist Model
Patterns of object naming often differ between languages, but bilingual speakers develop convergent naming patterns in their two languages that are distinct from those of monolingual speakers of each language. This convergence appears to reflect interactions between lexical representations for the two languages. In this study, we developed a self-organizing connectionist model to simulate seman...
متن کاملBilingual Lexical Representation in a Self-Organizing Neural Network Model
In this paper we present a self-organizing neural network model of bilingual lexical development. We focus on how the representational structure of the bilingual lexicon can emerge, develop, and change as a function of the learning history. Our results show that (1) distinct representations for the two lexicons can develop in our network during simultaneous acquisition, (2) the representational...

متن کاملDual-Coding Theory and Connectionist Lexical Selection
We introduce the bilingual dual-coding theory as a model for bilingual mental representation. Based on this model, lexical selection neural networks are implemented for a connectionist transfer project in machine translation.
متن کاملSelf-organizing map models of language acquisition
Connectionist models have had a profound impact on theories of language. While most early models were inspired by the classic parallel distributed processing architecture, recent models of language have explored various other types of models, including self-organizing models for language acquisition. In this paper, we aim at providing a review of the latter type of models, and highlight a numbe...
